Spousal Support payers have converged and paraded down the streets of Ottawa. “Spousal Support is Slavery!” yelled one protester. “Stop Servitude, Stop Servitude, Stop Servitude” The chant persisted through the protesters which are of about 150 according to Tim the coordinator of this event. While most of the attendees are Men, Tim stated that there are many high income earner females in their ground which also demand that Spousal Support orders be cancelled.
Tim says that Spousal Support is a violation against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. When a marriage ends, and it ends on the “no fault” principles then why is the one spouse obligated to support the other Spouse who initiated the divorce? Its an abuse of the system, forcing the higher income earner into a degrading, financial devastating servitude to a former spouse.
The way the court views a marriage is as an economic contract. SO given that an employee can demand their employer who terminates them can claim an income indefinitely until they find a similar or better job. In essence that how spousal support works.
We feel spousal support is a form of bondage to a failed marriage and has no right to be allowed in a free society.
