In a recent interview, Ruby Dhalla assured Canadians of her integrity, boldly declaring, “I am honest—just like Justin Trudeau.” A comparison that immediately raised eyebrows, heart rates, and several fact-checking websites.
Dhalla insisted she has done “nothing wrong” and is simply “following the lead of the Liberal Party,” which, in recent years, has become something of a brand slogan. She dismissed allegations from her own party—ranging from possible violations of the Canada Elections Act to financial reporting “irregularities”—as nothing more than thinly veiled racism.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Party confirmed it had disqualified Dhalla from the leadership race, citing concerns about “certain other election finance matters, non-disclosure of material facts, and inaccurate reporting.” Translation: paperwork that would have been totally fine if she were already Prime Minister.

“When will the racism in the Liberal Party end?!” Dhalla shouted as the interview wrapped up, leaving us torn between sympathy and déjà vu. After all, one could argue she’s simply following tradition: denying wrongdoing, blaming critics, and calling it a day.
“They want a white Carney to replace a white Trudeau who replaced a long line of white leaders,” she added, before storming out. Which, in fairness, is the most honest sentence uttered by any Liberal in months.
